Soumitra Chatterjee (bengali : সৌমিত্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়) est un acteur indien bengali né le à Calcutta[1] et mort le [2],[1] dans la même ville. Il a joué dans de nombreux films de Satyajit Ray.

Biographie

Soumitra Chatterjee est diplômé en littérature de l'université de Calcutta. Son premier film, Le Monde d'Apu (1959) est aussi sa première collaboration avec Satyajit Ray, et le début d'une collaboration qui se prolongera jusqu'aux années 1990. Outre sa carrière d'acteur de cinéma et de télévision, il est aussi acteur, auteur et metteur en scène de théâtre. Il écrit et récite également de la poésie[3]. Le film documentaire Gaach (l'Arbre), réalisé par Catherine Berge, lui est consacré.

Récompenses

Chatterjee a refusé la Padma Shri que lui avait décerné le gouvernement indien dans les années 1970[3]. En 2004, il reçoit et accepte le Padma Bhushan[4], troisième plus haute distinction civile décernée par l'Inde. Il a été fait Officier des Arts et des Lettres[3]. En 2012, il reçoit du gouvernement indien le prix Dadasaheb Phalke, récompense qui distingue chaque année une personnalité pour l'ensemble de sa contribution au cinéma indien[5].
