Yrjö Engeström

Yrjö Engeström (s. 1948 Lahti)[1] toimii aikuiskasvatustieteen professorina Helsingin yliopiston käyttäytymistieteellisessä tiedekunnassa.

Väitöskirjassaan Learning by Expanding (1987), hän on kehitellyt teoriaa ihmisten yleisestä toimintamallista. Hän on tehnyt kirjan Lev Vygotskin ja A.N. Leontjevin välittyneen toiminnan kolmiomallin pohjalta.[2]

Engeström toimii myös viestinnän professorina Kalifornian yliopiston San Diegon kampuksella, jossa hän työskenteli Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition -yksikön johtajana 1990–1995. Engeström on lisäksi Birminghamin yliopiston kunniatohtori.[3]

Engeström toimi jo lukioaikoinaan Lauttasaaren yhteiskoulussa aktiivisesti teinipolitiikassa ja valittiin Teiniliiton kouluasiainsihteeriksi eli käytännössä pääideologiksi. Teiniliiton tavoitteeksi tuli perustaa Helsinkiin Summerhill-ideologiaan pohjautuva vapaa kokeilukoulu, mutta hanke hyytyi samaan aikaan käynnissä olleeseen peruskoulu-uudistukseen. Hankkeen tuloksena perustettiin edelleen toimiva päiväkoti, Pakilan Lastenpaikka.[4]

Engeström valittiin Suomalaisen Tiedeakatemian jäseneksi vuonna 2011.[5]

Yrjö Engeströmin poika on Yhdysvalloissa asuva internetyrittäjä Jyri Engeström.[6]
