Vihreän ja sinisen välähdyksen syntymekanismi

Vihreät välähdykset ja vihreät säteet ovat harvinaisia optisia ilmiöitä, joita näkyy joko juuri auringonlaskun jälkeen tai juuri ennen auringonnousua. Auringon yläosasta näkyy hieman taivaanrannan takaa, mutta vihreänä, tai auringon yläosasta osoittaa ylöspäin vihreä säde.[1]

Vihreitä välähdyksiä ja säteitä näkee yleensä matalilla paikoilla, joista näkyy taivaanranta, esimerkiksi merellä tai rannalla.[2] Vihreä hetki kestää sitä kauemmin, mitä hitaammin Aurinko laskee. Keskileveysasteilla päiväntasaajan ympärillä vihreä välähdys kestää korkeintaan sekunnin tai kaksi. Etelänavalla vihreää välähdystä on havainnoitu jopa 20 tunnin ajan.[3]

Vihreät välähdykset ja säteet johtuvat valon siroamisesta ilmakehässä. Laskevan auringon yläosa vihertyy tavallisestikin hieman, mutta vihreä välähdys edellyttää kangastuksen, joka laajentaa vihreää aluetta tai kadottaa muunväriset näkyvistä.[1][2] Ennen kuin vihreät välähdykset osattiin selittää optiikan avulla, niitä pidettiin pelkkänä uskomuksena. Vihreän hetken näkemisen on esimerkiksi ajateltu tuovan onnea.[4]

Sininen välähdys

Ilmakehän taittumisilmiö aikaansaa yleensä vain vihreitä välähdyksiä. Sininen välähdys näkyy vain, jos ilmakehän olosuhteet ovat lähellä täydellistä, jolloin ero sinisen ja vihreän valon taittumisessa on mahdollisimman voimakas.[2]
