Star Citizen on Cloud Imperium Gamesin (CIG) kehittämä tuleva avaruussimulaatiopeli ja MMORPG.[1][2] Vuonna 2021 tuli täyteen kahdeksan vuotta pelin rahoituksen alkamisesta ja pelistä on osia saatavilla ennakkojulkaisuna alpha-vaiheessa.[3]

Kehitys

Pelin kehittäjiin kuuluu Wing Commander -sarjasta tunnettu Chris Roberts.[2] Pelin kehitys on rahoitettu joukkorahoituksella sekä myymällä avaruusaluksia ja muuta lisämateriaalia.[2] Rahoitus on ylittänyt 400 miljoonaa dollaria marraskuussa 2021.[2] Rahoittajiin kuuluu 3,3 miljoonaa henkilöä.[1] CIG:tä on käsketty selventämään, että myytävät alukset eivät vielä ole pelissä vaan konsepteja.[3] Syyskuussa 2022 uutisoitiin rahoituksen määrän ylittäneen puoli miljardia dollaria yli neljältä miljoonalta tukijalta.[4]

CIG on kertonut avaavansa uuden studion Manchesteriin, joka kasvattaisi studion työntekijöiden määrän 400:sta tuhanteen työntekijään vuoteen 2026 mennessä.[1] CIG:llä on lisäksi työn alla yksinpeliosuus Squadron 42, johon on liitetty tunnettuja Hollywoodin näyttelijöitä.[1][2][3] Squadron 42 on seitsemän vuotta jäljessä suunnitellusta julkaisusta.[1]

Vuonna 2016 CIG kertoi pelimoottorin vaihtamisesta Amazon Lumberyardiin: kehitys alkoi aiemmin CryEnginellä.[5]
