Sigismund

Pyhä Sigismund (kuoli 524) oli burgundien kuninkaan Gundobadin poika ja hänen seuraajansa burgundien kuninkaana 516–523. Katolinen kirkko teki hänestä myöhemmin pyhimyksen.

Burgundit ja siten myös Gundobad olivat areiolaisia kristittyjä, mutta Sigismund lähti Viennen piispan Pyhän Avituksen oppiin ja kääntyi katoliseen uskoon. Hän perusti luostareita ja hänen toimintansa johti sittemmin monien burgundien kääntymiseen katolisiksi, vaikkakin suurin osa pysyikin areiolaisina aina valtakunnan romahdukseen saakka.

Vuonna 501 Gundobadin murhautettua veljensä Godegiselin nousi Sigismund hänen vallanperijäkseen. Hänestä tuli kuningas 516, ja hänen politiikkansa seurasi edeltäjien jalanjälkiä. Paljon voimakkaampi naapurivalta frankit uhkasivat burgundeja, ja Sigismund yritti lepytellä heitä naimakaupoilla. Hän murhautti myös poikansa oltuaan tyytymätön tähän. Välillä hän saattoi tulla katumapäälle teoistaan ja vetäytyä luostariin.

Vuonna 523 frankit hyökkäsivät Klodvigin poikien johdolla. Voitokkaat frankit tuhosivat burgundien sotajoukot, mutteivät vielä pystyneet miehittämään maata. Sigismund saatiin kiinni ja vietiin frankkien maille, jossa hänet teloitettiin seuraavana vuonna. Burgundit pitivät häntä marttyyrina. Sigismundin luut tuotiin myöhemmin esille ja niille rakennettiin alttari. Myöhemmin hänestä tuli pyhimys.

Sigismundin jäätyä kiinni joukkojen johto siirtyi hänen veljelleen Godomarille (myös Gundomar), josta tuli burgundien kuningas. Hän kykeni pidättelemään frankkien lopullista voittoa vielä vuosikymmenen verran.
