Pyhä Sebastianus

Puuhun sidottu ja nuolten lävistämä Sebastianus.

Pyhä Sebastianus tai Pyhä Sebastian (k. noin 288 jaa.) eli legendan mukaan 200-luvulla Roomassa. Hän oli kristitty keisarillisen henkivartioston upseeri, jonka kerrotaan salassa käännyttäneen monia ihmisiä kristityiksi.[1] Sebastianus jäi kiinni uskostaan, jolloin keisari Diocletianus määräsi hänet surmattavaksi nuolin.[2] Hän selvisi teloituksesta hengissä ja leski Irene hoiti hänet terveeksi, mutta myöhemmin Sebastianus tuomittiin uudelleen ja nuijittiin hengiltä. Hänet haudattiin Rooman katakombeihin ja haudan päälle rakennettiin kirkko nimeltä San Sebastiano fuori le mura (tai San Sebastiano ad catacumbas).[2]

Keskiajalle asti Sebastianusta pidettiin ruttotautisten parantajana ja jousiampujien suojelijana, mutta renessanssiaikana häntä alettiin pitää mieluummin marttyyrina. Sebastianusta pidetään myös äkäisten lasten pyhimyksenä.[1][3]
