Petter Adolf Karsten

Petter Adolf Karsten (16. helmikuuta 1834 Merimasku – 22. maaliskuuta 1917 Forssa)[1] oli oman aikansa huomattavin sienitieteilijä. Hänet tunnetaan nimellä ”suomalaisen sienitieteen isä”.

Karstenin vanhemmat olivat maanviljelijä Petter August Karsten ja Lovisa Granberg. Hän pääsi ylioppilaaksi 1856 ja opiskeli Helsingin yliopistossa valmistuen 1860 filosofian kandidaatiksi, maisteriksi, lisensiaatiksi ja tohtoriksi.[1]

Valmistuttuaan Karsten muutti Tammelaan, jossa vietti enimmän osan elämästään opettaen ja tehden tutkimustyötä Mustialan maatalousopistossa, joka on nykyään osa Hämeen ammattikorkeakoulua. Hän oli Mustialan maanviljelysopiston kasvitieteen lehtorina 1864–1908. Karsten keräsi valtavan näytekokoelman sekä omin neuvoinensa että kirjeenvaihtajiensa avustuksella. Karsten nimesi 200 sukua ja 2 000 uutta lajia. Hänestä käytettävä auktorilyhenne kasvien nimien yhteydessä on P. Karst.[2] Hän sai ylimääräisen professorin arvon 1900.[1]

Karstenin puoliso oli Jenny Hedman (s. 1842), metsänhoitaja Gustaf Adolf Lennart Karsten (s. 1864) oli heidän poikansa.[3]
