Oravanpyörä

Oravanpyörä (< ruots. ekorrhjul) on vertauskuva loputtomalle ja turhalta tuntuvalle toiminnalle. Erityisesti sitä käytetään kritisoitaessa stressaavia töitä sekä elintasokilpailuun ja kuluttamiseen pohjautuvaa yhteiskuntaa.[1] Osa työntekijöistä vierastaa työ- ja kulutuskeskeistä elämää. Työnteon kohtuullistamisen tarvetta on usein lasten ollessa pieniä tai lähellä eläkeikää. Vähäisempi työnteko voi olla tarpeen, jos työtehtävät ovat hyvin vaativia tai jos työntekijällä on ongelmia terveyden tai työn mielekkyyden kanssa.[2]

Sanan alkuperä

Kirjaimellisesti oravanpyörä tarkoittaa oravan käyttämää juoksupyörää. Todellisuudessa jyrsijöiden juoksupyörät ovat nykyään enemmän hiirten, hamsterien ja gerbiilien käyttämiä eikä oravan pitäminen häkkieläimenä Suomessa nykyään ole edes laillistalähde?. Näin ollen sanaa ei nykyisin juuri käytetä kirjaimellisessa merkityksessä.[1]
