Kölin sumu

Euroopan eteläisen observatorion VLT-teleskoopin ottama infrapunakuva Kölin sumusta on tarkin siitä koskaan otettu kuva.[1]

Kölin sumu (tunnetaan myös nimillä NGC 3372 ja Eeta Carinae -sumu) on Kölin tähdistön suunnalla, noin 10 000 valovuoden päässä sijaitseva suuri ja kirkas emissiosumu. Se on pääasiassa ionisoidusta vedystä (H-II) koostuvaa uusien tähtien voimakkaan muodostumisen aluetta. Kölin sumun kirkkaus on ensimmäistä magnitudia.[2]

Kölin sumun löysi ranskalainen tähtitieteilijä Nicolas Louis de Lacaille 25. tammikuuta 1752 kaksivuotisen, Hyväntoivonniemeen suuntautuneen matkansa aikana.[2]

Yksi Kölin sumun tunnetuimmista tähdistä on Eeta Carinae, hyperjättiläinen, jota ympäröi punertava Homunculus-sumu. Eeta Carinae on muodostunut Kölin sumussa.[2]
