Josef Loschmidt

Joseph Loschmidt (15. maaliskuuta 1821 Počerny – 8. heinäkuuta 1895 Wien) oli muun muassa kineettistä kaasuteoriaa tutkinut itävaltalainen fyysikko.[1][2] Hän sai ensimmäisenä laskettua jota kuinkin luotettavan arvon kaasun molekyylien läpimitalle. Hänen mukaansa on nimetty Loschmidtin vakio tai Loschmidtin luku,[1][2] joka kertoo kaasussa olevien molekyylien lukumäärän tilavuusyksikköä kohti normaaliolosuhteissa.[3] Hän laski vakion arvon vuonna 1865.[1]

Loschmidt opiskeli kaksi vuotta Prahan yliopistossa, jossa tapasi mentorinsa ja myöhemmän tukijansa filosofi Franz Exnerin. Hän muutti Wieniin 20-vuotiaana ja valmistui Wienin teknillisestä yliopistosta vuonna 1846. Loschmidtilla oli vaikeuksia saada akateemista virkaa ja hän työskenteli pitkään lukion opettajana.[2]

Saksankielisissä maissa nykyistä Avogadron vakioa kutsutaan toisinaan myös Loschmidtin luvuksi.[2]
