Jacob Hübner

Jacob Hübner (20. kesäkuuta 1761 – 13. syyskuuta 1826) oli saksalainen hyönteistieteilijä. Hänen pääteoksensa Sammlung Europäischer Schmetterlinge oli alan perusteos, jossa on kuvattu 2627 eurooppalaista perhoslajia.[1] Teoksessa on perhoset ja niiden toukat on esitelty yksityiskohtaisin värikuvin, jotka Hübner maalasi elävästä mallista korostaen niitä piirteitä, jotka ovat tärkeitä lajien tunnistamisen kannalta.[2]

Ennen Hübnerin aikaa perhoset jaettiin päivä- ja yöperhosiin ja ajateltiin, ettei niiden anatomia anna perusteita tämän tarkempaan jakoon eri sukuihin. Hübner oli eri mieltä, mutta koska hän toimi yksin ja vaikutti vähäisessä Augsburgin kaupungissa, hänen työnsä jäi vaille huomiota.[3]
