Schön suoritti bachelor-tutkintonsa Yalen yliopistossa 1951 ja opiskeli sen jälkeen filosofiaa Harvardin yliopistossa, mistä hän väitteli tohtoriksi 1955 aiheenaan John Deweyn kasvatusfilosofia. Hän opiskeli myös pianon- ja klarinetinsoittoa Sorbonnen yliopistossa. Schön oli naimisissa kuvanveistäjä Nancy Quintin kanssa. Heillä oli neljä lasta.[1]
Hänen ensimmäinen merkittävä teoksensa Displacement of Concepts (1963) käsittelee keksimisen dynamiikkaa ja metaforien merkitystä luovissa prosesseissa.[2] Teos liittyi hänen työhönsä Arthur D. Little -konsulttiyrityksessä vuosina 1957-1963.[1]
Vuonna 1968 hänet nimitettiin vierailevaksi professoriksi Massachusetts Institute of Technology -korkeakouluun. Neljä vuotta myöhemmin, 1972 hän sai hoitaakseen professuurin nimikkeellä Ford Professor of Urban Studies and Education. Hän johti Department of Urban Studies and Planning -yksikköä vuosina 1990–1992. Schön toimi MIT:ssä kuolemaansa saakka.[1]
Schönin tärkeä yhteistyökumppani oli hänen MIT:n vuosinaan aikuiskoulutuksen ja organisaatiokäyttäytymisen asiantuntija Chris Argyris. Yhdessä he tarkastelivat organisaatioiden kehittymisen, mukautumisen, oppimisen ja epäonnistumisen problematiikkaa. Yhteistyö johti 1970-luvulla kahteen yhteiseen kirjaan: Theory into practice (1974) ja Organizational Learning (1978). Jälkimmäisestä julkaistiin vuonna 1996 uusi laitos nimellä Organisational learning II: Theory, method and practice.
Poliittinen kuohunta 1960- ja 1970-lukujen Yhdysvalloissa synnytti vasemmistolaisten ja oikeistolaisten ääri-ilmiöiden ohella myös maltillisia keskiryhmiä. Maltillista suuntausta kannattanut Donald Schön uskoi tutkimisen, reflektion ja oppimisen mahdollisuuksiin yhteiskunnan maltillisessa uudistamisessa marginaalista käsin.[3]
