Abd-ul-Hamid I

Abd-ul-Hamid I (20. maaliskuuta 1725 – 7. huhtikuuta 1789) oli Osmanien valtakunnan sulttaani 1774–1789. Hän syntyi Istanbulissa sulttaani Ahmed III:n ja sulttaanitar Rabia Semin pojaksi. Hän opiskeli nuoruudessaan äitinsä johdolla ja perehtyi mm. historiaan ja kalligrafiaan.[1]

Abd-ul-Hamid nousi Osmanien valtakunnan valtaistuimelle, kun hänen veljensä sulttaani Mustafa III kuoli sydänkohtaukseen 21. lokakuuta 1774. Hän seurasi tarkoin hallintonsa toimintaa ja halusi kehittää maan sotavoimia. Niinpä janitsaarijoukkoja ja merivoimia ryhdyttiin nykyaikaistamaan ja armeijaan perustettiin uudet tykistöjoukot. Abd-ul-Hamid voitti kansan suosion puolelleen johdettuaan Istanbulin palokuntaa vuoden 1782 palon sammutustöissä. Hän sai lempeytensä ja hartautensa ansiosta lisänimen Veli eli ’pyhimys’.[1]

Abd-ul-Hamid kuoli 64 vuoden iässä vuonna 1789, ja hänet haudattiin Topkapin palatsiin Istanbulissa.[1]
