Émile Reynaud.

Charles-Émile Reynaud (8. joulukuuta 1844 Montreuil-sous-Bois, Ranska – 9. tammikuuta 1918) oli ranskalainen keksijä, taiteilija sekä piirroselokuvan pioneeri.[1] Hän opetti professorina fysiikkaa ja luonnontieteitä Ecoles Industrielles du Puyssa vuosina 1873–1877.[2] 21. joulukuuta 1877 hän sai patentin praksinoskoopille. Sylinterin muotoinen laite perustui phenakistiskoopin ja zoetroopin paranteluun ja se sai kunniamaininnan Pariisin maailmannäyttelyssä vuonna 1878. Hän kehitteli tästä laitteesta kaksi paranneltua versiota. Vuonna 1888 hän esitteli Théâtre Optiquen, joka oli useammalle katselijalle tarkoitettu versio phenakistiskoopista. Esityksen kesto ei aikaisempien laitteiden tapaan enää ollut rajoitettu sylinterin sisäpinnalle piirrettyyn 12 kuvan määrään. Hänen Pariisin Musée Grevinin kanssa solmimansa sopimuksen perusteella ensimmäinen julkinen valkokankaalla esitetty animaatio (Pantomimes Lumineuses) esitettiin kyseisessä museossa 28. lokakuuta 1892.[3] Tapahtuman johdosta kansainvälinen animaatioelokuvien yhdistys, Association Internationale du Film d'Animation (ASIFA) on julistanut 28. lokakuuta kansainväliseksi animaatiopäiväksi.[1]

Rahaton ja unohdettu Reynaud tuhosi kaikki merkittävimmät laitteistonsa ja kaikki paitsi kaksi (Poor Pierrot ja Around a Cabin) animaatiotaan heittämällä ne Seineen.[1][3]

Yksityiselämä

Reynaud avioitui Margueritte Rémiatten kanssa Pariisissa 21. lokakuuta 1879. He saivat kaksi poikaa – Paul (1880) ja Andre (1882).[1]
