Philip Miller

Philip Miller (1691 London18. detsember 1771 Chelsea, London) oli šoti päritolu inglise aednik ja botaanik. Tema botaaniline autorilühend on Mill..

Ta oli Londonis asuva Chelsea Physic Gardeni peaaednik 1722. aastast alates. Miller oli kirjavahetuses paljude botaanikutega ja kogus taimi üle maailma. Ta oli paljude taimede esmakasvataja Inglismaal ja üks riigi parimaid taimetundjaid. 1730 valiti ta Londoni Kuningliku Seltsi liikmeks.

1733. aastal saatis ta esimesed puuvillapõõsa seemned Ameerikasse Georgiasse.

Miller oli kaua vastu Carl von Linné binaarsele nomenklatuurile ning eelistas Joseph Pitton de Tourneforti ja John Ray klassifikatsioonisüsteemi. Alles 1768. aastal ilmunud "Aedniku sõnaraamatu" 8. trükis võttis ta Linné süsteemi üle.

"The Gardener and Botanist's Dictionary: Containing the Best and Newest ..." (1807) teoses on sissekanne Salisburia adiantifolia, autoriks Smith, ja Gingko biloba Lin. Milleri sissekande kohaselt (sarnaneb James Edward Smithi ettekandega[1]) peaks perekond asetsema Linné süsteemis Quercus-e ja Juglans-i vahel. De Jussieu süsteemis peaks see kuuluma Taxus-e järel Coniferae seltsi olemata lähedas suguluses ühegagi neist. Smith olla eelistanud, kuna biloba on ebakorrektne, nimeks adiantifolia-t (seda viimast on kasutanud Kaempfer ja Thunberg ja see on antud juhul eriti sobilik. Nimetus Gingko on uncouth ja barbaarne aga Linné on tema lisanud lisasse ootele, kuni õisi näha saab ja seejärel saab taim oma õige koha süsteemis.[2]
