James Gregory

James Gregory

James Gregory (november 1638 Drumoak, Aberdeenshire, Šotimaa – oktoober 1675 Edinburgh) oli šoti matemaatik ja astronoom. Ta kirjeldas ühe varase peegelteleskoobi (Gregory teleskoop) ehitust ning tegeles trigonomeetriaga.

Gregory õppis Marischali kolledžis ja Padova Ülikoolis. 1668. aastal valiti ta Londoni Kuningliku Seltsi liikmeks. Hiljem töötas ta professorina Saint Andrewsi ülikoolis ja Edinburghi ülikoolis; Saint Andrewsi lõi talle Regiuse matemaatikaprofessori koha kuningas Charles II, tõenäoliselt Kuningliku Seltsi ühe asutaja Robert Moray soovitusel.

James Gregory oli abielus maalikunstnik George Jamesoni tütre Maryga. Nende poeg James oli Aberdeenis King's College'i füüsikaprofessor. James Gregory lapselaps John Gregory oli arst ja publitsist ning kuulus samuti Kuninglikku Seltsi.
