Las estrellas náuticas son una serie de cincuenta y siete astros de primera y segunda magnitud empleados por los marinos para el cálculo de su situación en alta mar y en las verificaciones de su rumbo. Son fácilmente identificables por ser las más sobresalientes en el firmamento y las más brillantes de cada constelación.

Por su intenso brillo, son las primeras en aparecer en el firmamento durante los crepúsculos vespertinos y las últimas en desaparecer en los matutinos, que son los momentos más idóneos para efectuar las observaciones astronómicas dada la simultaneidad de visión de los astros y el horizonte.

Junto al Sol, la Luna y los planetas Venus, Marte, Júpiter y Saturno, son los puntos de la esfera celeste empleados en astronomía náutica como referencia para la navegación.

Las coordenadas celestes de estas estrellas se publican en los almanaques náuticos, edición anual que debe llevarse a bordo para la resolución de los triángulos esféricos que señalan la posición de la nave, ya sea mediante el empleo de tablas de cálculo rápido o mediante el empleo de tablas de logaritmos.
