After postdoctoral research with Irene M. Gamba at the University of Texas at Austin, she joined Michigan State University as an assistant professor of mathematics in 2011. She was promoted to associate professor in 2016 and full professor in 2021.[3] In 2023 she was the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation Visiting Professor at Uppsala University in Sweden,[5] and moved to her present position as a professor of mathematics at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the Computational Modeling & Data Analytic Program.[3][6][1]
Recognition
Cheng was the 2023 recipient of the Germund Dahlquist Prize of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, in recognition of her research "on discontinuous Galerkin methods, including structure preservation and sparse grid methods for kinetic and transport equations".[6]
