I just wanted to note that I've started Wikipedia:Museum projects, per discussion at the meetup. I will contribute more to it later. There haven't been any new meetups to my knowledge, but maybe we can start thinking about another one. Jmabel is busy for a few weeks, when he gets back might be a good time to plan it. That would put us in late June or into July. If that's before you depart for Europe, we could get one in before you head for Wikimania. The Vancouver Wikipedians are apparently having a meeting on September 24, with the idea of planning to possibly host Wikimania next year. For more information see this page. • I can get just about any day to work for me. What about Saturday the 15th? I think the larger issue might be finding an organizer who can create a list with code numbers for the contest, then collect all the photos and score them. • Same here, but I think the premise is that the contest will drive participation. I've never been involved in one before so I don't really know. If it didn't look so time-intensive and complicated, I'd go ahead and be the organizer. Anyway, if it does turn out that nobody is willing run the contest, we should still do a meetup and take as many photos as we can.

Hey,

This is an idea that I have been kicking around for a while. I wanted to talk about last meetup, but I had to go early and did not get a chance to raise the issue.

Would any one be interested in a weekly co-editing session? Not an outreach project, just a day and time where people could stop by to edit, chat, relax and have community.

I would mostly be taking responsibility for this. I would make the commitment to be somewhere at a certain time every week with a Wikipedia sign (and if no one else shows up, that is just how I normally edit Wikipedia then...). But, to set the initial day and time I would like to find at least one other person who could make it.

I work remotely and thus have lots of free time, and I live in cap hill: so, something like 1:00-3:00pm Wednesday at the main branch library would be the perfect thing for me. I'm sure Seattleites, have know limitations of attracting local groups with our software, limited to watchlist notices. In 2016, WM-NYC filed a task to allow CentralNotice (the banners on top of article pages) to target readers in local areas. Efforts have stalled and to spur progress it would be great if you could support it in the Community Wishlist Survey. Voting ends November 30.

An example, CentralNotices were ran for Wikipedia's 10th birthday. WM-NYC had to cut pre-registration early, unable to accommodate the shear number of people signing up. Subsequent birthdays had at most 1/10 the RSVPs. — Dispenser 11:49, 21 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, all! Since most coffeehouses are still operating with reduced hours in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to determine somewhere where we can gather. I have given up on an evening venue & am thinking that Saturday or Sunday afternoons would be better.

I am going to suggest the Gathering Space at KEXP-FM. During the weekend days that I have visited, it seems like they have ample space, plus there is a Caffè Vita location there & KEXP's live-streamed music at a volume conducive to conversation. I do not have a solution for that, since weekday evenings have proved problematic. I think most, like me, are unavailable during typical workday hours. @Buidhe: do you work during federal holidays as well?

The location is a bit inconvenient (requiring either a slow bus ride or monorail + walk from downtown), but would be neat as a temporary venue. Long-term I'd be in favor of a weeknight location north of the Ship Canal or closer to Link light rail due to the difficulty in reaching downtown most days of the week. Starting later this year, there will be significantly more weekend construction on I-5 that would hamper my ability to attend. SounderBruce 01:53, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

The only location I could find that meets Peaceray's suggestions and SounderBruce's recommendations is the Jewel Box Cafe at Thornton Place (adjacent to both Northgate Stations (mall and transit station)) in Northgate. I wouldn't mind visiting KEXP as a one-off thing, but I would prefer a location closer to I-5 or Link light rail considering the heavy congestion on main arterial roads during rush hour; it would be especially convenient for me once the Lynnwood Link Extension opens next year (hopefully). The location looks great — a five minute walk from the light rail. Small is okay. The most we had last year was around six people. We will need to switch to a different day — perhaps Wednesday evenings would be good.

How soon do we want to start? I have a meeting on the the 15th & will be away during Presidents' Day week, but that should not stop anyone.

I still would like to have a couple of one-offs on the weekends, perhaps around Women's History Month & WP:Wiki Loves Pride/2023. I am thinking that Capitol Hill might be better than KEXP because there is a light rail station there. Is anyone familiar with or have a relationship with the cafés there? Regarding Little Oddfellows, it seems that their reservations page is only meant for their main cafe next door, which closes at 3:30 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays; it closes at 9 PM on all other days. We could try to meet at the Elliott Bay Book Company store itself, but they don't do table reservations as far as I'm aware of. If we're willing to move the meet to another day, I'm fine meeting at the main cafe; if not, I still think the Jewel Box Cafe in Northgate would be the best option for us on Tuesday evenings. Hi, I started with Little Oddfellows in the Elliot Bay Book Company since I was already familiar with it. I called around & found that I needed to reserve a table directly with Little Oddfellows by phone (206-323-1511). I made a reservation for Tuesday, March 19th from 6–8pm for a table of six.

Since I have been parking at Bainbridge, taking the ferry as a passenger, then using the light rail, Capitol Hill is more convenient for me. Also, Capitol Hill is more central in Seattle (I have walked there from downtown & it is a 1.5 mile walk from the ferry), so I think it makes a better choice. I have met there for another meet up, have eaten there several times & edited using their WiFi. I like the place.

The Capitol Hill light rail station is 0.4 miles (0.64 km) away from the bookstore. Mass transit that serves the Capitol Hill station includes the First Hill Streetcar & the 8, 9, 10, 43, 49, 60 busses. The First Hill Streetcar & the 2, 11, 49, & 60 busses all travel within 1½ blocks of Elliott Bay Book Company.

Geo-fencing refers to the Wikipedia:Geonotice function. You can find examples for the Portland area at Wikipedia:Geonotice/Old requests/2024 § Wikipedia:Meetup/Portland/Jewish Women Artists 2024 and Wikipedia:Geonotice/Old requests/2022 § Wikipedia:Meetup/Portland/Social/October 2022. @Bri and Sarsenet: I am sorry, but with traveling from Port Townsend, preparing for the intro to Wikipedia presentation, baking the Wikipedia cake, & picking up water, cups, plates, & utensils, I just did not have the bandwidth to set this up a video conference link. We also were using the monitor for the intro to Wikipedia the entire tune, so we would have had to prepare a separate set up for the more experienced editing that was going on. Hi, I was wondering if we can move the May meetup to the 13th. I know this is the second month in a row that I am asking for a reschedule, but I rarely do this. The Seattle International Film Festival runs from May 15–25, & I have a pass for the festival.

Speaking of the festival, as part of my work on the SIFF articles, I have created Draft:2024 Seattle International Film Festival that is modeled on 2024 Sundance Film Festival. As of this comment, I have corrected the Wikilinks & added templates in the Narrative features section from A Journey in Spring through The Extortion. Improvements to the draft & suggestions on the talk page are welcome. I hope to have other post-COVID years created & launched by the time the festival starts, but after I get the 2024 draft in better shape I will turn my attention to the SIIF article itself. @SounderBruce and RiverLongAndFar: we were talking about doing some sort of photo walk either in or near Seattle. (We haven't done one here since the pandemic.) My schedule is largely open (or at least flexible) the next few months except for being unavailable roughly July 29 through August 6. I'm guessing others have a much more scheduled life, and that only certain times of day / days of the week work for them. Can you give me some parameters?

Anyone else interested is also very welcome to chime in. Hi, we had briefly discussed some at the Cascadia Wikimedians general membership meeting about Jmabel possibly giving a workshop on editing with GIMP, particularly for photos of public domain works in museums.

I would like to propose a two part workshop.

1. Photographing works at the Seattle Art Museum, in particular:
   • SAM on Paper: Rembrandt’s Etchings: This would give us a chance to add an Etchings by Rembrandt in the Seattle Art Museum category to commons:Category:Etchings by Rembrandt.
   • Portrait of Alexander J. Cassatt: A portrait of the American railroad executive Alexander J. Cassatt painted by his sister, Mary Cassatt, the Impressionist painter. This particular painting may present a challenge as it is under glass & reflecting light.
2. Processing the images with the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP)

If we haven't received a response from Seattle Parks and Recreation yet regarding a reservation at the Washington Park Arboretum for this year's Wikinic, I think it may be worthwhile to contact the University of Washington Botanic Gardens about it if not already attempted since they apparently operate the arboretum jointly with Seattle Parks (according to their website). I did notice that the Seattle Parks online reservation system only shows the sports fields as an option within the arboretum, so there may be a jurisdiction issue that could be hopefully clarified by UW before the Wikinic if we reach out to them via their website's listed contacts. @CascadeUrbanite: Seattle Parks & Recreation is responsible for issuing permits. They have been unresponsive to my last two emails. Therefore I am not pursuing anything further with them. Our numbers have been & most likely will be below the radar. Hi all, I've been working on the article serpent labret with articulated tongue, which includes a gallery of related labrets. The Seattle Art Museum holds another example (link), but has not responded to a request to license its images. Is there any chance someone lives nearby and might be able to take a photo? For pictures, the object itself would certainly be in the public domain, but the SAM pictures themselves would presumably be under copyright by Elizabeth Mann. I am intermittently in Seattle; perhaps there may be others who can check. Otherwise I will eventually get to get to the appropriate gallery to see if it is on display. SounderBruce contacted me by email about deciding on a place & a time. I did create Event:Seattle Wiknic 2026 & initially set it up for Saturday, 22 August, for the meadow at the Arboretum.

I think that the objection of Seattle Park & Recreation in 2024 was due to the geonotice that Pharos put up, which made it very public. I think that if we have a geonotice & a central notice that points to the section of the Wikipedia:Meetup/Seattle § Scheduled meetups in Seattle for the picnic (see the commented out code, <!--{{Event:Seattle Wiknic 2026}}-->), I think the fact that it would be at the Arboretum would be far enough removed (Geonotice/Central notice→WP:Meetup/Seattle→Event:Seattle Wiknic 2026) that Seattle Parks & Recreation would not consider the Geonotice/Central notice to be publicly promoting the event, at least not in the up front & central way that we did two years ago.

If you at the meetup decide on another date &/or place, SounderBruce (who I have added to the event coordinator role) or Jmabel (as an admin) could make the changes.

My apologies for not writing about this sooner. I have been excedingly busy these past several weeks, including going to my son's wedding & being with my sisters for seven days, attending a camp in BC, & a three day conference before that. On Thursday, I flew to London then took a Eurostar train today to Paris for Wikimania, which starts tomorrow, Tuesday, 7/21. Because I am 9 hours earlier than Seattle, I will not see any decision from the meetup until Wednesday morning, CEST. If there has been no change or I have not gotten notified, I will assume that the original proposed time & place is good. Otherwise, I presume someone will let me know & implement the changes to the Event page. In either case, once things are settle, I will take of the geonotice & setting up the central notice.
