Viettel Telecommunications Corporation (Vietnamese: Tổng Công ty Viễn thông Viettel), doing business as Viettel Telecom (VTT) or simply Viettel, is a major Vietnamese telecommunications enterprise and the core division of Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group.[3][4] Established on April 5, 2007, it is the telecommunications carrier with the largest market share in Vietnam.[5][6][7][8][9]
History
On June 1, 1989, the Military Telecommunications Corporation (Viettel) was established under its original name, the Electronic and Information Equipment Corporation.[10][11] In 1995, the Electronic and Information Equipment Corporation was renamed the Military Telecommunications Corporation, becoming the second telecommunications service provider in Vietnam.[12]
In 2000, Viettel was granted a license to pilot a long-distance telephone service using VoIP technology on the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route under the 178 brand.[13][14]
In 2003, Viettel expanded into the basic telecommunications sector, investing in infrastructure and installing switchboards, officially launching fixed telephone services into its business operations on the market.[15] On October 15, 2004, Viettel Telecom launched its GSM mobile phone network with the prefix 098, becoming the fourth mobile network operator in Vietnam.[16][17] Viettel's mobile network has extensive coverage throughout Vietnam, utilizing 2.5G technology.[18]
On March 2, 2005, in accordance with a decision by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, the Military Telecommunications Corporation was established. On April 5, 2007, Viettel Telecom, a subsidiary of the Viettel Military Telecommunications Corporation, was established through the merger of Viettel Internet, Viettel Fixed Telephone, and Viettel Mobile.[19][20]
