Velké Janovice is located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Žďár nad Sázavou and 49 km (30 mi) northwest of Brno. It lies in the Upper Svratka Highlands. The highest point is at 701 m (2,300 ft) above sea level.
History
The first written mention of Velké Janovice is from 1364. At the end of the 15th century, the village was acquired by the Pernštejn family. From 1588 until the establishment of a sovereign municipality, Velké Janovice belonged to the Bystřice estate.[2]
There are no railways or major roads passing through the municipality.
Sights
There are no protected cultural monuments in the municipality.[5] In the centre of Velké Janovice is the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, which was built in 1892.[6]
