I'm writing to ask for more details on how you created the Map of the Roaring Fork River drainage basin in western Colorado as seen on the Crystal River Colorado page. My family lives in Marble, Colorado and I am contributing to a forthcoming guide book that maps and details wildflowers of the Crystal River Valley.

I want to create a custom map of the Crystal River, key towns, and drainages. Would you be willing to share the software you used to create your map and source data in hopes that I might be able to create a similar version focused on the Crystal River (vs wider Roaring Fork)? Alternatively, I'm interested in commissioning the creation of this map so please let me know if that is something you would be interested in helping with—the style and detail of your maps is exactly what we're looking to include in the guide book.

Happy to help you! I create my maps with QGIS, which is free open source GIS software. I'm not sure how familiar you are working with GIS layers, but these are my data sources. NASA's SRTM layer for topography (download link) and the National Hydrography Dataset (downloadable through USGS National Map). Labels can be added with Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator or really any image editing software.

That article is in need of a general overhaul, as it has been growing in a somewhat uncontrolled manner during the past 2 or 3 years. I'd like to ask if you would be interested in forming a team to give it a proper scrub. The article is not mainly about Californian rivers, but the project does cross quite a few along the right-of-way! I stepped in to rescue Klamath River from GAR. I trimmed the "Indigenous people" section back, removing unsourced material that wasn't relevant to the river itself. Thanks for your map of construction status of California High Speed Rail. However, there is a problem with the map legend. The item "ready for use" is inappropriate, for a couple of reasons. The term "Ready for use" is not a recognized term, as there are several stages to revenue service - track completion, electrification complete, trainset testing completed, certified for revenue service, etc. But primarily, since this legend item does not appear anywhere in the map itself, and since revenue service is not projected to begin until 2032, including this item has the appearance of bias, and bad faith.

Can you revise it, please? I would suggest replacing this item with "electrification complete," and then you can show the SF-San Jose segment in green. Scorcheroo (talk) 19:28, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

I responded under the topic you opened on the CAHSR discussion page. The points you raised here are different though.

Since I was the one who edited the map to specifically read "Ready to Use", I should probably address your new points here. When we discussed the need for a map we were well aware of the technical stages. But there is always a trade-off to be made between adhering to industry standards and making things useful to the target audience. The distinction between track completion, OCS completion, dynamic testing etc. is too fine-grained to be useful. Such information should be conveyed in prose. Given the long span of the project, it was deemed appropriate to summarize track & systems into a single item, being of similar significance as major milestones like environmental clearance, starting, or completing civil construction. "Ready for use" is something the reader cares about and understands, as it clearly conveys the successful completion of all those items. In a few years, the first segments will be marked as such.
