Thank you so much for adding all those photos of Nova Scotian Premiers! That made me very happy to see. I've never heard that provincial works of Nova Scotia expire 50 years after publication, where can I find that information? I was under the impression things like that fell under crown copyright. @MediaKyle All works by Federal and Provincial governments expire 50 years after publication - not creation. Most works meet this criteria. Just need to be careful when looking through archives as a handful of works were never published. Generally majority of works were ‘published’. Especially with member portraits of a Legislature, these things were widely used. Glad to be of assistance! If you need any help with uploading or have questions feel free to ask here! Hello again. I'm currently working on an article about the third provincial archivist of Nova Scotia, Draft:C. Bruce Fergusson. I found a few images of him on the Nova Scotia Archives website but I'm not really sure whether they would fall under Crown copyright, and I remembered that you had previously uploaded those photos of Premiers. Would images such as this and this, and this fall under Crown copyright and thus be okay to upload, do you think? Based on what you said before it seems like it might be a bit of a grey area, as it doesn't specify whether they were previously published, but all would fall outside the 50 years mark. @MediaKyle It is possible. Unfortunately it is unclear to me who created the photos. For 1&2, the only mention is to credit the ‘Nova Scotia Information Service’. Potentially that is whom created the works, is that a provincial government department of Nova Scotia? Perhaps reach out to the archives for clarification on their creators and origin. They might be able to tell more about the photos. By default, number 3 is technically PD in Canada outside of Crown Copyright, but due to Wikimedia Commons rules, we can’t upload it yet; ({{PD-1996}}) - unless of course it’s a crown work. Thanks a lot for getting back to me, I appreciate you taking the time. I just looked into it and I noticed to the right of the first two images there's a link to an archival description, seen here, where it specifies the creator of the materials as the Nova Scotia Information Service, which was a provincial government department. I suppose that would mean the first two are alright to upload, but not the third? I think it would be reasonable to assume the third image is a Crown work, but I can't find confirmation of that. Yousuf Karsh (December 23, 1908 – July 13, 2002) was an Armenian-Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. An Armenian genocide survivor, Karsh emigrated to Canada as a refugee. By the 1930s he established himself as a significant photographer in Ottawa, where he lived most of his adult life, though he traveled extensively for work. His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill was a breakthrough point in his career, through which he took numerous photos of known political leaders, men and women of arts and sciences. Hi Pascal,

I saw that you undid some of my image changes to the Canadian parliamentary articles. I'd love if we could have images of the Prime Ministers that match the period of each parliament. Do you think you could help me find some higher quality images for those years. You seem to know quite a bit about sourcing images for Wikipedia.

@Absalom.absalom I reverted those edits as the previous images of higher quality and close-enough to the time period to serve their purpose. Where needed, I try to strike a balance between quality and recency/time period. I am always searching for new (old) photos to upload, but many photographs are still under copyright and we have to wait for that to expire. PascalHD (talk) 19:40, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, yes, I'm still trying to figure out the copyright stuff, Wikipedia doesn't make it super easy to understand. For an image like this one, where it is maybe not yet in the public domain, but where it says there are no restrictions on use, would we be able to use that one?

@Absalom.absalom Yes, a ping like that works. That photo you shared is from 1953 by photographer Gaby. Per {{PD-Canada}}, it would not be in the Public Domain yet. His estate still holds copyright as can be seen in the file description. Library and Archives Canada does not allow free use of works still under copyright, only Public Domain images from LAC can be uploaded to Wiki Commons. That 'no restrictions' notice does not refer to copyright, don't be fooled by it! Happy to answer any other copyright related questions you may have. PascalHD (talk) 21:16, 23 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
