Minorities have a large role in the Prison-industrial Complex. Much of the PIC is fuel by incarceration of people of color. A black male is much more likely to be incarcerated than a white male, the rate of incarceration for black females is equally disproportional to white females [1]. The current state of this is due to many historical factors like profit driven companies controlling privatized prisons and the huge penalties associated with all drug crimes. This contributes to the fact that African-Americans are dramatically overrepresented in every phase of the criminal justice system [2].
For privatized prisons, this is beneficial to them, an increase in the number of prisoners correlates to a growth in revenue for these contractors hired by the government. This has led many politicians who are influenced by these contractors to be “tough on crime” which no citizen can object to. In reality, this means an increased number of arrests in urban, black areas. Accounting for the disproportionality within the justice system [3]. Asian Americans are not usually associated with the Prison-industrial complex but they have been marginalized because of it. Since the mid-nineteenth century Asians have been immigrating to the United States. Many have taken jobs as skilled workers but many, particularly in the Western United States, have taken agricultural jobs. Privatize prisons in these areas are not likely to hire minorities so Asian Americans lose out on employment. Other groups also see Asian-Americans as the reason for their incarceration because they are the model minority [4]. This has created tension between minorities and unequal employment for a group that is not likely to perpetrate crimes.
