Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, Jr. is the main character of the film 8 Mile. B-Rabbit is portrayed by Eminem as well as created by him. The character of B-Rabbit is based off of Eminem and him starting his music career.

James Smith, Jr. was born in Detroit, Michigan to his poor mother Stephanie and father James Smith, Sr. His father is not present in the movie, most likely having to have abandoned him as Eminem's father did. Jimmy grows up living in the 8 Mile Trailor Homes in poverty.

While growing up, Smith had a dream to become a rapper, but spent time working at a pizza restaurant.

Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, Jr. begins at The Shelter, a local hip hop club where rap battles are the subject. Smith's close friend David "Future" Porter (Mekhi Phifer) calls Jimmy on stage to perform a rap battle against Lil Tic (Proof). B-Rabbit steps on stage after vomitting in the restroom. After Lil Tic raps, B-Rabbit is struck with stage fright, and cannot think of anything to say. He steps down from the stage, which later becomes something his rivals use to taunt him with. As he leaves, Jimmy is acquainted by friends David "Future" Porter, Sol George, Wink and Cheddar Bob (Evan Jones).

B-Rabbit returns home to walk in on his mother and boyfriend, Greg Beuhl (Michael Shannon). He later on engages into a fight with Beuhl, only to be broken up by his mother, Stephanie.

In later events of 8 Mile B-Rabbit is with David Porter as they are fixing Smith's mother's car. They begin rapping along with the rhythm of "Sweet Home Alabama". Porter then volunteers to sign up B-Rabbit for the battle rap competition at The Shelter, while Smith resists, but Porter goes behind his back and signs him up, causing great tension between the two.

B-Rabbit later becomes involved with a girl named Alex Latorno (Brittany Murphy). She later on cheats on him with Wink, as Jimmy later finds that Wink was hanging out with his enemies, a rap group under the name "The Free World". During a confrontation with The Free World, Jimmy's friend "Cheddar Bob" reveals to carry a gun he aparently stole from his mother. Jimmy orders Bob to put the gun away, and in the attempt, Bob shoots himself in the leg, which later becomes a common thing used to tease him.

Jimmy catches Alex in the act of cheating on him with Wink, and physically assaults Wink in a radio studio. Jimmy leaves, and later that night, picks up his little sister Lily (Chloe Greenfield) from a neighbor's house. He is closely pursued by a car containing The Free World, including Wink. Jimmy notices, and tells Lily to "go inside and lock the door" of their trailor home. The Free World leaves the car, revealing the head of The Free World, "Papa Doc" (Anthony Mackie). Jimmy is beaten brutally by The Free World as Lily calls to him from inside the trailor. One member reveals a Beretta M9 pistol he intends to shoot Jimmy with, however, Wink calls him off. They leave, and Jimmy stays on the front porch until his mother comes home.

Jimmy had made the decision earlier on to record a demo album to show to major record producers and possibly become a famous rapper, possibly based off of Eminem's demo album Infinite.

Jimmy meets up with Future, Sol George, and Cheddar Bob at The Shelter at the night of the rap battle contest. Jimmy, under his stage name B-Rabbit faces 3 members of The Free World. He first faces a rapper named "Lyckety Splyt" (Strike) and then a rapper named "Lotto" (Nashawn Breedlove), and finally Papa Doc. Papa Doc insists that Jimmy goes first in the rap battle, and Jimmy is able to defeat him, leaving Papa Doc speechless. Jimmy wins the rap battle as the crowd cheers his stage name, and he notices Alex in the crowd. His friends insist he stays and parties with them, celebrating his victory, however, Jimmy remembers he has to go to work that night, and departs for his job. He may possibly become a rapper later on, but at the end of 8 Mile, the rest is left unclear.
