Here you learn all about the Blitz!
The Blitz (Blitz means lightning in German) was the terrible bombing by germany during the secon world war between 7 September 1940 and 10 May 1941. The bombing was not only in London but also many towns and cities as well. Other important military and industrial centres such as Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester, Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Southampton, Swansea, also suffered heavy air attacks and high numbers of losses where there to. It happened for 76 consecutive nights and more than one million London houses were destroyed or damaged, and more than 40,000 civilians were killed, half of them in London. The bombers where the Luftwaffe airforce (German airforce). Birmingham and Coventry were heavily targeted due to the Spitfire and tank factories in Birmingham and the many factories in Coventry. The city centre of Coventry was almost completely destroyed.
The bombing was responsible by Hitler who told the Luftwaffe air force (German Air force) to invade the UK as it was, at the time, the only country still fighting against him.
His planned invasion required the knocking out of the RAF and that is what was tried in early September 1940 and is now known as The Battle of Britain. Had that gone on for much longer, it is doubtful whether the RAF could have survived. However, suddenly and for no apparent reason, the Luftwaffe turned from bombing RAF facilities to bombing cities, first London and then others. This became known as the Blitz. This enabled the RAF to regroup.
