AfD is fundamentally about review -- just the corner of review that requires community consensus: delection (singled out because of its disruptive nature, and again when admin powers were created because admins have to actually do the deletion).
Seeing an "AFD" notice on the top of a page is always a frustrating shock to a good-faith author; the nominations are usually posed in a bad-faith way (not consciuosly; implicitly because of the structure of the forum), and discussions ignore the important review aspects of even the speediest deletion: was the author well-intentioned? how can they be notified to keep their interest? will something like the article one day be useful? is any of the information or reference-list worth keeping in another format?
Concept: set up 'Articles for Review' which is the first place to bring most such discussions. Add assessment of the intent of the author in all deletion processes, as this should at least influence the handlingn of communication with the author. Come up with an equivalent speedy assessment for current 'speedy delete' candidates which are created in good faith. [the idea of treating vandalism and spam the same way as an hour of good-faith effort on the part of a contributor is outlandish].
enough abstractions!
We don't need to speak in the abstract, when there are a hundred case studies a day. Here are some examples, in the following format:
- ARTICLE NAME on AFD : reason. origin-date; # of edits; # of refs; special features;
- level of communication with other page editors or authors | type of debate
ARTICLE NAME below is red, brown, purple, green, or blue, depending on how suitable it seems to me to the core of AfD:
- Red: a traditional deletion discussion,
- Brown: a deletion discussion that should be handled politely (very new material, possibly useful w/ explicit claims of notability, uncertain language issues, new editors),
- Purple: a mixed discussion, part review and part deletion (not solely "AfD"; a 'cleanup or delete' nom, material that should at worst be merged elsewhere)
- Green: a review discussion that should not be framed in terms of deletion (good material, long-standing editors, clear links to other works, active discussion), or
- Blue: a discussion about content that is so clearly unsuited for AfD [good, long-standing, high-author-count articles with useful, sourced information] that any contributor to the original article can be expected to be offended by the existence of the thread.)
