Jonathan Wachtel

Jonathan Wachtel is an international broadcast and Web journalist. He spent a decade overseas based in London and Moscow with ABC News and Worldwide Television News (WTN). Now in New York, Jonathan produces and reports domestic and international breaking news for Fox and writes and produces hour specials on foreign affairs.

He has coordinated coverage of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, the Israeli-Arab conflict, Darfur, the Haiti earthquake, the death of Princess Diana, and the collapse of the Soviet Union, among other events.

Jonathan manages Fox’s United Nations coverage and files radio and foxnews.com reports about international affairs.

He won awards for coordinating 9/11 coverage at Ground Zero and for covering US Special Forces operations in Afghanistan.

Jonathan began his journalism career by establishing WTN’s Moscow office just before the USSR broke apart and went on to report on Mikhail Gorbachev’s hostage crisis, Boris Yeltsin’s rise to power, and the wars in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

In 1994 Jonathan was transferred to WTN’s headquarters in London (now Associated Press TV), where he handled senior newsroom positions and reported the top stories of the day to world broadcasters. He also worked at the BBC, streamlining WTN-BBC newsgathering operations.

ABC News hired Jonathan as an assignment editor in London, where he coordinated coverage in Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa and the Middle East. He was acting weekend news producer and handled editorial and production tasks for World News Tonight, Nightline, and other shows.

Jonathan earned his bachelor’s degree in Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of California at Berkeley and his master’s degree in management from the NYU Wagner School of Public Service. Jonathan lectures on news coverage and foreign affairs at universities and various forums. He is a member of the United Nations Correspondents Association.
