Biggi Vinkeloe is a jazz musician and composer who plays alto saxophone and flute. She was born in Germany, studied and lived in France from 1974 to 1988. Since 1990 she lives and works in Sweden and in California.
One of her first recordings was as a member of the European big band that avant garde jazz legend, pianist Cecil Taylor, organized in 1989 - Legba Crossing, Cecil Taylor in Berlin. Later she had the opportunity to play in Taylor's group at the Documenta Art Fair in Kassel.
In 1992 Biggi Vinkeloe made her recording debut as a leader for a trio with double bass player Georg Wolf and drummer Peeter Uuskyla (Mr. Nefertiti). After moving to Sweden, Biggi Vinkeloe recorded a couple of trio records, with a line-up where Peeter Uuskyla was the drummer and the bass chair was held on and off by two of the jazz world's most prominent bass players, Barre Phillips and Peter Kowald. Several trio recordings were also made with electric bass guitarist Peter Friis Nilsen. One record with Phillips, Mbat (LJ Records, 1994), was voted best jazz CD of the year in Finland 1997.
Vinkeloe has collaborated with non-jazz musicians such as heavy metal electric bassist Magnus Rosén and drummer Anders Johansson, church organ player Karin Nelson and accordionist Marie Wärme, and with dancers and choreographers such as Inka Tiitinen and Tommy Kitti and visual artists Jake Tilson, Andrew Cowie and Ebbe Pettersson. She has initiated and participated in several projects and performed at festivals in Europe and Canada.
Biggi Vinkeloe has been ”Artist in Residence” at the Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco and she has received grants from her present home town Kungälv, from several regional foundations and from the Swedish Council for Cultural Affairs.
Vinkeloe's ability to perform in different contexts has taken her to festivals like the Noise Festival in Brighton and to performances with several of the most well-known musicians in jazz, improv and related genres on both the east and the west coast in the US.
