The Manhattan String Quartet was formed in 1970 by first violinist Eric Lewis, and cellist Judith Glyde. They were joined by second violinist John McLeod and violist Andrew Berdahl and immediately participated in the first Young Professionals string quartet program hosted by the Lenox String Quartet at SUNY Binghamton in Binghamton, NY. Soon after, they served on the faculty of Grinnell University in Ginnell, Iowa before returning to the New York under the management of Thea Dispeker. The move to NY saw a reshuffling of personnel.
In 1981, with the stabilization in membership, the MSQ was engaged as the summer resident performers at Music Mountain in Falls River, CT, performing weekly for live radio broadcasts from June to September as well as hosting training sessions for young professional string quartets and coaching adult amateurs with Rachmael Weinstock. They maintained the residency until 1989.
In 1985, in a gesture of rapprochement with the Soviet Union, the quartet was invited to the Soviet Union as guests of the American ambassador, Arthur A. Hartman. Upon resumption of cultural exchange, they toured the USSR on two occasions, bringing an American interpretation of the works of Dmitri Shostakovich.
