CAP did not have a uniform when it was founded in December 1941. The War Department's Quartermaster Corps was designing a unique blue or brown uniform for CAP by January 1942, but wartime supply shortages forced them to abandon the plan in June and authorize CAP members to wear the regular Army Air Force uniform with distinctive insignia.[1] The changes included silver CAP buttons on the coat, red shoulder loops and red sleeve braid for officers, red background for rank chevrons for enlisted members, red piping on the overseas cap instead of black and gold piping, and "CAP" lapel insignia instead of the standard "US" insignia. Initially, only the overseas cap was authorized, but the service cap with CAP insignia was authorized in October. Uniforms were not issued to CAP members, who could purchase them at their own expense from Army Exchange Service store.
