Option 2: Personalized Learning in New Jersey

The New Jersey Law: N.J.A.C. 6A:8-5.1(a)1ii is commonly known as Option 2 (or "Option Two, or "Option ii" or "Program Completion"). Option 2 is part of an educational reform movement to allow students to personalize their high school educations. It recognizes that each student has his/her own learning style, gifts, challenges and passions. Option 2 allows local school districts in New Jersy to approve educational experiences, some outside of the traditional classroom delivery, for high school graduation credit.

Why Option 2 in New Jersey?

Option 2 is a valuable piece of a NJ high school student's educational plan. It engages and challenges the learner to reach higher and empowers him/her in their education. Their are numerous advantages of including Option 2 in a student's educational plan including: increasing a student's options, helping to identify career interests, allowing a student to enroll in classes not offered in his/her high school, allowing for acceleration therefore enabling a student to "jump ahead" in an academic area, allowing "Concurrent Enrollment" (receiving high school and college credit at the same time) and implementation can be of economic value allowing a student to enter college with several credits earned.

Potential Learning Experiences

Option 2 learning experiences must "meet or exceed" a student's graduation requirements in their school district. Potential learning experiences are limitless. Students can partake in numerous learning activities such as independent study, internships, externships, online/distance learning, service learning, college courses and other additional learning experiences (participation in travel teams, marching band, competitive dance and/or cheerleading teams etc).
