Masi Asare (born 21 April 1978) is a composer, lyricist, playwright, voice teacher, and theatre professor.[1][2] Her most notable work includes writing lyrics for Broadway musical Paradise Square.[3]
Asare is an assistant professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at Northwestern University.[6] She was named Faculty Fellow at the Northwestern University Kaplan Institute for the Humanities for 2021-2022 for her research on black women and vocal sounds in musical theatre.[6][7]

In June 2020, Asare hosted a podcast Voicing Across Distance in which she spoke about vocal sound during the coronavirus pandemic and bringing together voice scholars and practitioners.[14][15]
Awards & Nominations
Asare was nominated for a Tony Award (Best Score) for her lyrics in Paradise Square in 2022. She is also a past Dramatists Guild Fellow and the first recipient of the Billie Burke Ziegfeld Award for emerging female musical theatre composers.[16][17]
