  • March 1970 - Yodogō hijacking incident: Nine members of the Japanese Communist League–Red Army Faction (a predecessor to the Japanese Red Army), hijack Japan Airlines Flight 351 in Tokyo, holding seven crew members and 122 passengers hostage. The hostages were released at Fukuoka and Seoul before the hijackers fled to North Korea, where they took asylum.[1]
  • 1972 - Japan and China normalize relations. In a joint communiqué, Japan states that it "is keenly conscious of the responsibility for the serious damages that Japan caused to the Chinese people through war in the past" while China dropped its demand for war reparations from the Japanese.[2]
  • 1972 - In accordance with a 1969 agreement between Prime Minister Eisaku Satō and President Richard Nixon,[3] the United States returns Okinawa to Japanese sovereignty, but retains U.S. military bases on the island.[4]
  • January 1974: Japan and China conclude a Japan-China Trade Agreement.[2]
