Leon Palafox (born October 9, 1981) is a Mexican artificial intelligence researcher, consultant, and entrepreneur. He is the Director of the AI Innovation Lab at Grupo Bursátil Mexicano (GBM), where he leads the development of advanced recommender systems, personalization engines, and AI-driven products for retail investment. Palafox has also held leadership positions at Novartis and Grupo Salinas, and has contributed to AI education as a professor at Universidad Panamericana.[1]
He is known for promoting the strategic use of data and AI within organizations to generate business value and for advocating the development of internal AI capabilities rather than relying solely on external vendors.
Palafox was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He studied engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and received the prestigious Medalla Gabino Barreda for being the top student in his class.[2]
He completed a PhD in Machine learning and Artificial intelligence applied to bioinformatics at the University of Tokyo. He later pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Arizona, where he worked on applying machine learning to planetary sciences, and at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he applied machine learning to neuroscience.
Palafox has nearly two decades of experience in the AI field, spanning both academia and industry. He served as Head of Data Science at Universidad Panamericana from 2018 to 2020, where he also helped design graduate curricula in data science. He was Director of Machine Learning at Banorte from 2020 to 2021 and later became Head of AI at Grupo Salinas. He subsequently joined Novartis in an AI strategy and IT enablement role, before moving to Grupo Bursátil Mexicano (GBM).
At GBM, Palafox founded and leads the AI Innovation Lab, an internal unit focused on developing large-scale personalization and recommendation systems, feature stores, experimentation layers, and telemetry pipelines to drive user engagement on GBM’s retail investment platform.
In addition to his industry work, Palafox teaches courses on deep learning, reinforcement learning, and advanced machine learning at Universidad Panamericana and regularly publishes columns on AI, data strategy, and innovation in El Financiero.
Palafox often emphasizes that artificial intelligence should be used as a tactical tool to augment human expertise rather than replace it. He has argued that organizations must combine domain knowledge with AI experimentation to unlock business value, and has criticized what he describes as the “sci-fi thinking” common among some AI experts.
He also advocates for building strong internal AI capabilities in Latin America to reduce dependency on foreign consultants, and for integrating data governance frameworks to support future generative AI use cases.
Palafox lives in Mexico City and has three children. He speaks Spanish, English, and Japanese, and enjoys travel, reading, and open-world video games.
