Buffalo (or Bison) Yarn
Buffalo (or Bison) Yarn
Buffalo fleece is either gathered in the spring as the animals shed the fibers all over pastures, or directly from hides after the meat is processed.
It is hypoallergenic, wicks water away from the body, and is easy care. Because it is a smooth fiber, it can be washed and dried without shrinking, and cannot be felted. It can be spun to any weight from lace weight up to Aran weight. It is easy to find in natural brown. At least one manufacturer has developed a process to dye the yarn a myriad of colors.
The resulting yarn feels like sheep's wool, but doesn't feel itchy. It is very warm. Have you ever seen buffalo trying to get out of the elements? No. They don't have to!
The finished garment is reminiscent of modern fleece, and is truly a unique garment, as there is a much smaller crop of bison wool than sheep's wool. The resulting yarn is knitted commercially, or packaged for home knitters/crocheters. It is suitable for mittens, gloves and hats, as well as garments. It is extremely durable!
