Jonathan Deal, (born 21 January 1959) is an African nationalist, environmental activist and author. Deal chairs internationally recognised anti-fracking organisation, Treasure Karoo Action Group [TKAG][1]. In January 2011, Deal created a campaign to oppose the advent of 'fracking' [shale gas mining] in South Africa. Within weeks the new campaign was supported by more than 7000 members. Under Deal's leadership, TKAG commissioned and delivered to President Jacob Zuma, a scientific and legal, critical review of the environmental management plans of Royal Dutch Shell in connection with their application to mine shale gas in South Africa.
Persistent pressure from TKAG, in the media and amongst the South African public was largely responsible for achieving a government moratorium on shale gas mining in April 2011.
