The entry on Liang Shu Ming consists of a concise summary on his background, growing up, works, and philosphical ideas for China's potential reforms that he advocated for in 1900s. Given that we have thoroughly read and discussed his work ''Eastern and Western Cultures and their Philosophies'[1]' in class, the information displayed on this entry appearred to be quite accurate and informative overall. However, I do find the author's style of writing a bit unprofessional, in a sense that it could be more effective to quote Liang Shu Ming from his work directly than paraphrasing it, since Liang's language was already easy to understand and straight to the point in the first place.
The entry on Zhang Zhi Dong overall is very educational. Zhang's early life, particularly his achievements through Imperial Examination[2], is well documented. It is claer that Zhang's accomplishment in academia led him to a successful political career. The entry accurately enlisted his political actions during Dungan Revolt (1862–77)[3], First Sino-Japanese War[4], Qing ceding Taiwan, as well as and his contribution to the modernization of the Chinese military. Zhang's conservative political reform ideas, such as “中体西用”[5] ("Chinese essence, Western application") are also well mentioned. Thus, the entry overall seems well balanced.
The entry provides a comprehensive introduction to Yogachara. It thouroghly explores the doctrine of Eight Consciousnesses[6] and The Three Natures[7]. The content displayed is well organized and balanced. It went into depth about Yogachara's idea of "conciousness-only" and the "emptiness" in nature. It demonstrated a variety of approches Yogachara uses, including Meditaiton, psychological anaylysis, and karmic anaylysis, to achieve the state of cognitive and perceptual understanding that is in line with Buddhist thinking. However, one thing I noticed the entry did not do well on is the lack of emphasis on epistemological nature of Yogachara, which is very distinct from metaphysical idealism.
From doing this assignment, I realized that not every topic we discussed have its own Wikipedia entry, which gives people who are interested lots of opportunities to construct and contribute for the public knowledge. I learned that Wikipedia is an excellent platform where information can be allocated and utilized so efficiently due to the internet network. Wikipedia not only helps to save writers much more time to gather sources, it also helps readers save time since it can structured in a way that it allows readers to go in-depth if they feel like it. Translation of certain Chinese ideas are somewhat difficult. However, it provides an opportunity for new interpretations through another language.
