The Edassery family of Nayarambalam, Narakkal is an offshoot of the ancient Kozhikadan family of Kanjoor. The separation from the parent family structure happened about 130 years back when Kozhikadan Kuriacko died leaving behind his young wife and five small children, i.e., three sons and two daughters. Since children were small and financial stability was not that bright, Smt. Kunjelia, widow of late Kuriacko took her five children and returned to her parent family of Vattathara Thalaveethiyil house, Nayarambalam, Narakkal. Later the younger son Kunjuvareed went back to Kanjoor to look after the properties left behind by his father, Late Kuriacko and settled there retaining the original family name of Kozhikadan. The other two brothers chose to have a new family structure and named it as Edassery. Thus a new family was born in Nayarambalam. The two brothers Kochu Paulo and Kochanthoni owing to their relentless hard work earned some properties in Nayarambalam, Edavanakkad and Nedungad. They married from Ooken House, Edavanakad. Due to their efforts, their sisters, Cherichikutty and Elikutty were got married from Parackal and Pullen House respectively.

Kochu Paulo had three children. They were Kochukuria later known as C. K. Kurian, Kunjuvareed known as C. K. George and daughter Kunjalakutty, who got married to Ouseph Vavu of Vattathara Kooran family, Nayarambalam. Kochanthoni had three daughters and one son. Edler daughter Kunjalakutty has been married to Kunjicheria of Parackal family, second daughter Kunjaithy was married to Ittiachan of Parackal family and third daughter Kochumariam was married to Augustin of Panjikkaran family. The only son Kuriaipu known as E. A. Kurian, married Mariamkutty from Thaliath family of Varapuzha. C. K. Kurian got married to Mrs. Mariamkutty of Payyapally family, Mannanthuruthu, Varapuzha and C. K. George married Sosamma of Alumkara family, Vaikom.

Mr. C. K. Kurian was a very illustrious and farsighted man. Taking note of his special acumen and talent, Dr. Ephraim Mampilly, one of the prominent physicians of the then erstwhile Cochin state picked him and made him a medical assistant at his clinic in Ernakulam. Later he went to Calcutta to be trained as an optician and in the 1920s, he started C. K. Kurian & Co, an optical business, the first of this kind in the erstwhile Cochin state. In the 1930s, C. K. Kurian switched his line of business to construction and government contracts after entrusting the optical business to his elder son. Mr. C. K. Kurian, by then properly known as “Kannada Kurian” was the mastermind behind many buildings that stands tall as landmarks of the city of Cochin today. This visionary passed away in 1959 at the age of 59 leaving his imprint over the community that has always admired him.

Mr. C. K. George was a known athlete during his school years and won laurels and represented the erstwhile Cochin state at Madras Interstate School Championships. When he was 22 years old, his father Kochu Paulo passed away and later C. K. Kurian took his mother and brother to Ernakulam and settled there in the later years of the 1920s. In 1931, both the brothers together started their first business enterprise known as C. K. Kurian & Brother, a provision and general merchandise shop in Ernakulam. C. K. George was entrusted with the shop. In 1940s, C. K. George went to Alleppy to engage in speculative trading in spices and oils and was a popular and prominent figure in the society during his era. He passed away in the year 1994.

Mr. E. A. Kurian got settled in Narakkal and was working as a medical assistant at the government hospital in Narakkal and went on to start a medical store in Narakkal. In the 1930s, he started his construction business and became a government contractor which he continued for the next 25 years. He passed away in the year 1969.

The brothers, C. K. Kurian, C. K. George and their cousin E. A. Kurian, throughout their life maintained an unique personal attachment with each other. The elder brother C. K. Kurian commanded the respect of all the other two in unequivocal terms. Their family members flocked together for each and every special occasion in their families. This unblemished nature of brotherhood was the main inspiration for the successors to form a family body called the Edassery Kudumbasangamam.

Formation of Edassery Kudumbasangamam

The Edassery Kudumbasangamam was formed back in the year 1998 with a gala inaugural ceremony conducted at Kurian Towers. Late Mr. Antony Kurian was its founder chairman. The motto adopted was "Brotherhood through charity and love." The kudumbasangamam has adopted a constitution for its onward functioning. The general body meets once in six months. The functioning is controlled by an executive committe which meets once in a month in members houses on a rotation basis. Every five years a gathering of all the family members including the married female members and their families is being conducted. The family members of the kudumbasangamam join together on special occasions in the family and come together for group tours and other social activities. At present there are 14 family units in the kudumbasangamam.
