Flooded street in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hot Cities is an eight-part environmental documentary series broadcast in Autumn 2009 by BBC World News. It highlights the economic and social impacts of climate change on some of the world's most populous cities: Lagos, Dhaka, Lima, Dakar, Havana, Shanghai, and Los Angeles.[1] Climate refugees are flooding urban cities where food and water supplies are threatened by rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and droughts.[2]

Episode List

Episode 1: Bursting at the Seams - Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos is one of the fastest growing megacities in the world.[3] The impacts of droughts and flooding are actively displacing those in rural areas to move to urban cities for relief. Migration into the city grows, along with the change in climate.[4] Increasing immigration congestion, infrastructure, and pollution contribute to the rise of greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to the occurrence of extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, drought.[5] Water scarcities are growing in Lagos, where water has become a precious commodity.[2]

Episode 2: Water, water everywhere - Dhaka, Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most affected countries by climate change in the world.[6] The country faces constant damages from coastal erosion, cyclones, coastal surges, overflowing rivers, and downpours.[6][7] Millions of Climate refugees from across the country are rushing into the capital because their homes are being destroyed.[8]
