Contrapposta (f.) is an expression in the visual arts to describe how certain artists present the human figure off-axis, yet in a way that still shows poise and harmony. It was, typically, an Ancient Classical concern and therefore also associated with other similar aesthetics in later movements such as the Renaissance, used by Italian artists such as Donatello, Leonardo and Michelangelo. I have chosen it as a username to promote the importance of revisionist theories, particularly in art history, that although may move in different directions to accepted wisdom, are nevertheless balanced through the application of rigorous methodologies.
