Chris Roush (b. Oct. 20, 1964) is the Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Scholar in business journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is considered a leading expert on business journalism.
In 2010, he was named Journalism Teacher of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication[1]. The judges noted that Roush "has become the expert in business journalism -- not just at Chapel Hill, but throughout the country and even in other parts of the world."
He is the author of two books about business journalism – "Show Me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" (second edition, 2010[2]) and "Profits and Losses: Business Journalism and its Role in Society" (2006[3]). He is the co-author of "The Financial Writer's Stylebook: 1,100 Business Terms Defined and Rated" (2010[4]).
Roush has been quoted about business journalism in publications such as The New York Times[5], The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and American Journalism Review[6] and has written about business journalism in Columbia Journalism Review and American Journalism Review.
He blogs about business journalism at www.talkingbiznews.com, which won a Society of American Business Editors and Writers "Best in Business" award in March 2010. He has also created a website on the history of business journalism at www.bizjournalismhistory.org and a website for college students interested in business journalism at www.collegebizjournalism.org.
Roush has led business journalism training sessions for media organizations such as the Associated Press, Reuters, The Motley Fool, Media General newspapers, The Orlando Sentinel, The Mobile Register, the South Carolina Press Association, the International Center for Journalists and newspapers throughout North Carolina. He has also worked with media outlets and universities in South Africa to improve business journalism in that country, visiting there in 2006 and 2007, and has spoken about business journalism in Spain, Finland and Russia.
Before entering academia, he was a business journalist for Bloomberg News, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, BusinessWeek magazine, the Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He was also editor in chief of SNL Financial, a Charlottesville, Va.-based company that publishes newsletters and magazines for professional investors.
His father was Gerald Lee Roush, a famous Ferrari historian.
