Attended high school at Buchanan High in Clovis, CA where he averaged 16.4 pts, 9.4 rebs, 6.3 asst, and 2.1 stl per game leading the team in every category playing the point foward position.

Earning 1st Team All-Conference honors, 1st Team All-Valley honors (Fresno Bee), and named Clovis Independent Mr. All Around in his senior season. Also, collected All-Tournament Team honors in the Buchanan Clovis West Tournament, Wild West Shootout in Reno, NV and Husky Classic at Sheldon High School also earning MVP honors at the City/County All-Star game in 2008.

After deciding to attend Fresno State out high school Sperling was able to make an impact with the Bulldogs right away as a freshman playing in all 33 games and starting 10 of them averaging 15 min per contest. Sperling in his 2 years at Fresno State averaged 3 pts, 2.2 rebs, and 2 assts per game starting a total of 24 games in 2 years. Finished up his career with the Bulldogs with a performance of 14 pts 4 rebs and 4 asst against LA Tech in the 2010 WAC Conference Tournament.

Sperling transferred to Humboldt State where he started every game his junior and senior seasons and helped lead the Jacks to a CCAA Conference Title and NCAA Tourney appearance with a 26-4 record his junior season and a CCAA Conference Tournament Championship and another second NCAA Tourney appearance with a 22-8 record his senior season. As a junior averaged 12.7 pts and 3 assits earning 2nd-Team CCAA All-Conference honors his junior year. Having breakout games of 23 pts against Chico State and Dominguez Hills. Senior season Sperling averaged 13.5 pts and 2.3 assists and 4.3 rebs earning 1st Team CCAA All-Conference Honors and CCAA All-Tournament Team for the 2011-2012 Season. Sperling recorded 2 career double-doubles of 17 pts and 10 assists against Simon Fraser and Cal State San Bernadino in his 2 year tenure at Humboldt State and lead in scoring in 8 different games and rebounding in 2 different games during the senior season.
