ARTICLE: Demographics of Asian Americans

EDIT: However, there are concerns that the goal of diversity in American higher education has had a negative effect on Asians, with charges of quotas and discrimination starting in the 1980s. For example, a stereotype has been created that Asian-Americans only study STEM and health related fields at their universities, when in reality this is not exactly true. Studies have shown that Asian-American students explore other fields of study as well. The study has shown Asian-Americans' academic interest in fields like social science, humanities, and education.[1] Asian Americans are said to be "taking over higher education," but what many fail to realize is these statements are often made without proper statistical presentation. The way information is presented has a major impact on how it is taken by the audience. The Asian-American student population is often presented in a way that does not represent all institutions. Only a small number of institutions are presented, usually selective enrollment institutions, thus making it appear that Asian-Americans make up a large part of a university's student population.[2] Moreover, this discrimination brought upon Asian-Americans in education has encouraged the model minority stereotype in American society. Although being considered a "model minority" may appear to be positive, in reality, it contributes to the negative effects education has on Asian-Americans. The high expectations placed on Asian-American students often cause the problems faced by these students to be overlooked. Issues related to social pressure and mental health are often overlooked due to the idea of the model minority. Education is one of the main aspects that are given a high regard in the social expectations of Asian-Americans. [3]

  • If you could improve one thing about this article, what might it be?
    • I would make the article much more neutral so it can give a broader perspective of Asian Americans and their education level
    • Cover the demographic of Asian-American that does not fall under the idea of the "model minority"
    • If an individual were to read this article, it would feed their ideal of how Asian-Americans are perceived by the media and society due to the lack of neutrality of the article
