202 Workshop Depot (202 WD; French: 202e Dépôt d'ateliers) is a unit that is an integral part of the Montreal military base[1] in Longue-Pointe, in the eastern part of the city. 202 WD is a land force unit and as of today, employs approximately 260 civilians and 80 military members. 202 WD is under the leadership of the Director General Land Equipment Program Manager (DGLEPM), who is part of the Department of National Defence’s Materiel Group. It is the only unit in Canada that provides 3rd and 4th line refurbishment services for Canadian Army equipment. 202 WD is recognized as a centre of excellence for equipment life extension, refurbishment and repair projects within the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). The location of the unit is very important strategically. In fact, its proximity to the Saint Lawrence River allows for the transportation of large equipment by boat.

History

202 Workshop Depot members of 1947.

202 WD was opened in 1946. The original intention was to create a depot for technical materiel that could be useful for Canada and the United Kingdom. The unit’s role was to repair materiel that had been damaged during an operation once it was returned to 25 Central Military Store (25 CMS). It was only on April 1, 1948, that 202 WD became an independent unit.[2] The unit quickly gained importance within the CAF and had to move numerous times due to a lack of space.

In 2016, the unit occupied nearly 350,000 ft2 under a decentralized command in four main buildings spread over nearly 16 acres.

Vision

Ready to act, no matter the weapon system!

Ready... 202 WD will put in place the necessary measures to react rapidly to priority operational requirements.

...To Act... 202 WD will be a polyvalent and agile organization who ensures the operational readiness of priority weapons systems for the Canadian Forces, no matter the level of maintenance required. 202 WD will be a unique asset and a partner to the defense industry.

...No matter the weapons system! 202WD's employees will be mobilized, motivated and have the necessary level of expertise and technical knowhow on all priority weapons systems. Furthermore, 202 WD will acquire the required resources in order to support a variety of different systems.

Mission

202 WD's mission is to provide competitive and diversified maintenance, repair and overhaul services on land weapons systems that meet the Canadian ForceOs operational level organizations.

Organization

The organizational structure of 202 WD is made up of four separate programs: strategic planning, the Deputy Commanding Officer, corporate services, and production. The production program is divided into three workshops that carry out repairs on the floor. The three workshops include the vehicle and weapons workshop, the manufacturing and components workshop, and the communications, cable, and electronics workshop. The program has specialized equipment to provide support to Canada's deployment operations on NATO and United Nations missions.

Capabilities

202 WD has very extensive capabilities regarding the support of the CAF land equipment. The unit has several working bays and several overhead cranes (up to 40 tons). It is therefore able to repair, restore, change, and/or refurbish several military armoured vehicles. 202 WD can also do 3rd line repairs and reconditioning on mechanical, hydraulic, weapons, fire control, optics, instruments, electronics and communication systems. The production program also has the necessary tools (machining, manufacturing, welding, etc.) to produce all types of parts, which are created by a development team based on an established need. The capabilities of 202 WD are vast from a technical perspective, and it providRes important supporttor the CAF and DGLEPM.

RCEME[3]

Some of the military members at 202 WD are part of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps (RCEME). The four trades of the RCEME, including vehicle technician, weapons technician, electronic and optronic technician, and materials technician, are present within the various workshops.
