Currently t his is a redlink on this template; however, while there's no single article on this topic, there are fairly extensive articles on each of the three lines -- Mountain View - Winchester (VTA), Ohlone/Chynoweth - Almaden (VTA), and Alum Rock - Santa Teresa (VTA). Yolobus and RT participate in the Solano Express program though the Bay Area. They provide feeder service into the Bay Area or to train stations that feed into the Bay Area. Monterey Salinas Transit has feeder service to the Caltrain at Gilroy 98% of which are headed for the Silicon Valley and even San Francisco. Neighboring counties often cooperate with each other. The Bay Area is considered to be the 9 counties by everyone but adjacent counties or communities in adjecant counties near the 9 county borders are often considered to be in the bay area. Liek Tracy in San Joaquin county, like Scotts Valley in Santa Cruz County. Santa Cruz county is often considered to be part of the bay area. The local news media tends to cover the entire greater region. Modesto Healdsburg Monterey even Lodi and Stockton. It forms a greater metropolitan area defined by from where people commute into the Bay Area. I'd argue that BART does not constitute a commuter rail system. In its rolling stock, fare structure, third-rail power, and frequent headways, it's essentially a modern heavy rail metro system, very much like the Washington Metro (which was built around the same time). While its long routes into the suburbs give it some of the qualities of a commuter rail system, anyone whose ever ridden (say) Caltrain will tell you that BART is a very different beast. --Jfruh (talk) 01:58, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-06-29T01:58:00.000Z","author":"Jfruh","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Jfruh-2007-06-29T01:58:00.000Z-BART","replies":["c-71.142.91.34-2007-07-01T22:12:00.000Z-Jfruh-2007-06-29T01:58:00.000Z"]}}-->

I also agree that it is clearly a subway/metro system but consensus agrees that by definition it is a commuter rail system and not a subway/metro. It f-ing frustrating but technicalities seem to win over reason on wikipedia due to overzealous nerds.71.142.91.34 22:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-07-01T22:12:00.000Z","author":"71.142.91.34","type":"comment","level":2,"id":"c-71.142.91.34-2007-07-01T22:12:00.000Z-Jfruh-2007-06-29T01:58:00.000Z","replies":["c-Jfruh-2007-07-02T12:34:00.000Z-71.142.91.34-2007-07-01T22:12:00.000Z"]}}-->
Wait, what consensus? Wikipedia consensus has long held that BART is a rapid transit/metro system:
  • Opening sentence of the BART article: "The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is a heavy rail public rapid-transit system..."
  • BART appears in this template, entitled "Currently operating heavy rail rapid transit systems in the United States."
  • BART appears in the List of rapid transit systems.
  • BART does not appear in the list of systems in the Commuter rail in North America article.
Based on all this, I'm making a change to this template. --Jfruh (talk) 12:34, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-07-02T12:34:00.000Z","author":"Jfruh","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Jfruh-2007-07-02T12:34:00.000Z-71.142.91.34-2007-07-01T22:12:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->

I recently added places and entities since i though government bodies like the MTC and WTA and programs such as All Nighter and Spare the Air belonged here. I also added places. I didn't put in every place because that would be wayyyy to much so i chose the most important ones in the region, big hubs and transfer stations in every region. Fremont because of its extensive feeder service into san jose, dublin/pleasanton for the same reason into the san ramon/diablo/amador/livermore/san joaquin valleys, martinez since it has all the amtrak lines running through it and it has feeder service from several agencies tridelta (antioch/east county), county connection (local central county walnut creek concord san ramon), westcat (west county/hercules richmond, el cerrito), benicia breeze (benicia solano county vallejo), and it a ferry terminal is planned here and in the works, and it will likely host future wBART service, i chose the most popular downtown sf bart stations since they had the highest ridership and were intermodal with muni and cable cars, balboa park since its intermodal/transfer station, milbrae intermodal caltrain/bart connection, mt. view vta light rial/caltrain, san jose diridon sj airport, buses, hwy 17 express to santa cruz, light rail, ace, capitol corridor amtrak, you get the picture, daly city since 3 lines terminate there, richmond intermodal, el cerrito del norte regional hub solano express/vallejo transit/fairfield suisin transit/west cat/golden gate transit/ohlone trail/ac transit/bart, the major bart transfer stations 12th st/macarthur, i didnt inlcude any bart stations just for being terminals but chose them based on ridership, if they were a regional hub attracting various agencies from far reaching areas in differant areas, if they had intermodality, if they were a major transfer station. so yeah thats the reasoning for the big additions.CholgatalK! 03:27, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-08-01T03:27:00.000Z","author":"Cholga","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Cholga-2007-08-01T03:27:00.000Z-Places_and_entities","replies":[]}}-->

(A) That it is a major transit interchange. (B) That it is adjacent to a major employment center or university. (C) That it is intermodal. (D) That it is a transfer station. (E) That is has regional feeder service from various bus agencies and that some of that service is far reaching. (F) That it is a major rail or ferry terminal. (G) Most of them fit into more than one of these categories. (H) Or that it will soon be such a major transit station, under construction, study, planned. And if several adjacent stations fit the profile, pick the principal one(s). Berkeley serves UC Berkeley,Berkeley City College, a 1R/BRT line, Bear Transit, a major downtown, transfers center, Concord is not a terminal station anymore (well limited anyways) but its a major downtown, highrises around the station, DVC, el cerrito del norte acts as the terminal with regards to feeder bus service from WestCat (hercules, pinole, martinez), Fairfield/Suisun Transit (fairfield), Golden Gate Transit (San Rafael), 72R/BRT line, AC Transit (local, richmond, berkeley, oakland, san francisco), Vallejo Transit, richmond doesnt since its away from the freeways north. The Solano Express service actually runs combined service to this station between various agencies from Sacramento to del Norte. Hayward has feeder sevice from AC Transit, but also its the station for CSU Hayward and transbay service to Hilldale/San Mateo Bridge/San Mateo, Union City station is going to be the terminal for the Caltrain/Dumbarton Bridge Rail line it has AC Transit Service and also Union City TransitCholgatalK! 04:17, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-08-02T04:17:00.000Z","author":"Cholga","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Cholga-2007-08-02T04:17:00.000Z-Important_transit_places","replies":[]}}-->

I think this article should be renamed to Northern California Public Transit, since there are article links in this template that are located out of the San Francisco Bay Area (e.g. Unitrans, Manteca Transit, MAX). Manteca Transit and MAX are only included because they have service within the San Francisco Bay Area, to dublin and pleasanton, San Joaquin Transit does too and it alse serves Tracy which is often considered to be part of the Bay Area altho most of San Joaquin county is not, its on the fringes just like Mountain House, California which altho in san joaquin county is served by Tri-Delta transit which serves eastern contra costa county, because it is so close to the county line, that town itself claims to be in the bay area. such an expansion would be just too much, it would include everything up from fresno and san luis obispo to oregon, i say no, but i will see if i can create a central coast, central valley, sacramento area, north coast/redwood empire and northern central valley templates in the near future, altho i may have to create the article for the template as i go along haha =)CholgatalK! 23:33, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-08-25T23:33:00.000Z","author":"Cholga","type":"comment","level":1,"id":"c-Cholga-2007-08-25T23:33:00.000Z-Proposed_renaming","replies":["c-Cholga-2007-08-25T23:43:00.000Z-Cholga-2007-08-25T23:33:00.000Z"]}}-->

as for unitrans it is part of the San Francisco Bay Area wiki Project. Unitrans serves the city of Davis and that city's southern border straddles Solano County, i believe some of its routes run in Solano County, their website is currently down so i could not make sure, but Davis itself is often considered part of the bay area since its right on the border of the "official 9 counties"CholgatalK! 23:43, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-08-25T23:43:00.000Z","author":"Cholga","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Cholga-2007-08-25T23:43:00.000Z-Cholga-2007-08-25T23:33:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
