The royal marines are clearly part of the royal navy [1]
- All are correctly part of the Naval Service, or in Layman's (but technically incorrect) terms, the Royal Navy, as per the original version. No, the Royal Marines are part of the ACTUAL Royal Navy. - See Naval Service, referenced from BR 1806, a bible for such matters. If you look through internal [publications], 'Naval Service' is the term that is used. Officially, and correctly, the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines are both component parts of the Naval Service, see here for a good example. Admittedly 'Naval Service' is not a commonly used term, but it is technically incorrect to say that the Royal Marines is a lower hierarchical component of the Royal Navy. I do not think the Layman's FAQ that you point to is reasonable grounds for making it so. - According to the UK Defence Statistics glossary, here, the Naval Service is the Royal Navy and Royal Marines combined, and the Royal Marines are (I quote), Sea-going soldiers who are part of the Naval Service. The Royal Marines are not a constituent part of the Royal Navy, rather, both are constituent parts of the Naval Service Emoscopes Talk 12:42, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__{"threadItem":{"timestamp":"2007-06-03T12:42:00.000Z","author":"Emoscopes","type":"comment","level":3,"id":"c-Emoscopes-2007-06-03T12:42:00.000Z-Emoscopes-2007-06-02T23:31:00.000Z","replies":[]}}-->
According to the glossary, which looks very reliable, Naval Service means only [2] Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The RFA is NOT included as a part, and is a civilian organisation.
