MrOllie and myself (stevens94) are having a disagreement about the content of the Voice logging page. I am an engineer who has worked in the voice logging industry for 15+ years, and I have been informally editing Voice logging since 2014. I am largely a novice at Wikipedia editing (though I have been reading Wikipedia since the earliest days). MrOllie is admittedly unknowledgeable about voice logging, but appears to have a very specific interpretation of the Wikipedia content guidelines. MrOllie is unhappy with the content of this page, in particular the list of voice logger manufacturers. In my opinion, this list is critical for inclusion, largely because it provides a history of the industry (because many of the manufacturers are now defunct and otherwise unfindable on the Web at all).

Below is a copy of the conversation I had with MrOllie on his Talk page. I am including it as part of the material for further dispute resolution of the appropriateness of content on this page.

MrOllie, I disagree with your removal of the MANUFACTURER list from the Voice logging page. Note that these are NOT VENDORS (e.g. VAR resellers or car dealers). Here is another page which lists MANUFACTURERS: Automobile industry. Please revert.

The situations are different. Automobile manufacturers are independently notable, voice logger companies are not. What you're trying to do is more like adding a list of local plumbers to the article on plumbing. - MrOllie (talk) 12:25, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Some of the manufacturers on the Voice logging list are publicly traded international corporations, e.g. NICE Systems and Verint Systems. They aren't plumbers. Can you be more specific. Are you suggesting that I create a new page entitled "List of Voice Logger manufacturers", and then link from Voice logging page? No, I'm telling you that Wikipedia is not a directory and lists of nonnotable companies are off-mission for this encyclopedia. If you would like to maintain such a list you should set up your own website and do it there. RE: the auto industry, you are comparing apples and oranges. The Auto industry is a large portion of the world economy and is written about extensively by independent press, including a large auto-specific specialist press. Can you please explain your assertion that the multi-billion dollar voice logger industry is not a "large" portion of the world economy (please define "large") and is not written about extensively (it is indeed written about extensively)? Isn't the whole point of Wikipedia to provide info about industries that YOU don't understand? I've been working in the voice logger industry for 15+ years, and this page is extremely useful for others in the industry (particularly for owners of old discontinued equipment which have no web presence). You seem to be more concerned with policing the site under your personal interpretation of the guidelines. I'm very disappointed in you MrOllie. - stevens94 (talk) 13:27, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

• Hi all! Here from Wikipedia:Third opinion. After reading the article and your dialogue, my take is that "Wikipedia isn't a directory" has not been properly answered. It is kind of whataboutism, which is an informal fallacy. Unless the aforementioned argument is addressed properly, MrOllie position is closer to WP editorial policies.
