"Denial of science", or similar, should be noted in the first paragraph

In a similar fashion the Wikipedia page for Flat Earth, it would be beneficial and noteworthy for this article to begin by stating that transphobia is a form of science denial. Thank you. MoonTheCraft (talk) 16:28, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

“Transphobia is a form of science denial” ugh… I’m sorry but it’s kind of a very hard claim to support ~2026-28834-89 (talk) 11:04, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As with most of Wikipedia, if we are to mention this, it would be very good to have a reliable secondary source that indicates it. Do you have something that discusses the "denial of science" perspective? —Quantling (talk | contribs) 18:53, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
This would be very difficult to source! Not sure it is even true Scientelensia (talk) 21:46, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

"Social disease", or similar, should be noted in the article

Transphobia can be called a social disease, as noted by this study. ~2026-35934-38 (talk) 10:00, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Picture – POV pushing

I doubt this picture (featuring Nazi imagery) is representative of all anti-transgender sentiment. It seems extreme, and pushes a POV. I advocate for its removal, or replacement. Scientelensia (talk) 16:05, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

It is illustrative of the intimidation used against transgender people and shows that it originates, mostly, from the far-right. Far from pushing a POV it illustrates the topic accurately, almost perfectly even. I'm not sure what could be a better image than this. You might say it is "extreme" but this is an article about a form of extremism and the image reflects that. We can't use a picture of an individual known transphobe, for very obvious reasons, and that would be even less representative of the overall topic. What do you think the actual problem is? What do you think the POV is here? Do you have a suggestion for a better image? If you can find anything better then maybe we can use that as the lead image and move the current image down but we are not removing the current image from the article. --DanielRigal (talk) 16:33, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure I agree with your reasoning. Whilst Transphobia sometimes implies intimidation (a far-right tactic), most 'Transphobia' (i.e. general opposition against the concept of trans people) comes from the centre and centre-right. The article itself starts off with a moderate sentence which doesn't couple the sentiment with violent tendencies – 'Transphobia consists of negative attitudes, feelings, or actions towards transgender or transsexual people, or transness in general.' This is why a Transphobia article shouldn't be represented by such a picture. For the article on violence against trans people, it would certainly be more relevant and more representative for the lead. That said, I can suggest a better picture for the lead – the bus one which is already in the article, since that one doesn't give undue weight to N*zi imagery. Other images would include File:TERF sticker.jpg, Transphobia symbol.png, or Transphobic Graffito.jpg. Take your pick, I think all would do nicely. Thanks, Scientelensia (talk) 21:43, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
As a courtesy I've attached the images linked. I agree with DanielRigal that the current one is the best of these. Aside from being a compelling piece of urban photography, it is also the most straight-forward possible illustration of the concept. I don't see how it implies that all anti-transgender sentiment is necessarily extreme or far-right. That said, I don't think my great aunt would know what "pronouns" were or have an opinion about them, if not for the many right-wing and far-right movements internationally rallying around transphobia as their favorite wedge issue of the 2020s. –RoxySaunders 🏳️‍⚧️ (talk • stalk) 02:43, 31 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
It is indeed a compelling piece of urban photography. But by affording it leading position in article – the first visual item readers see – it intrinsically ties transphobia with extreme-right sentiment, including Nazism. This evidently isn't the intention, but it is something to fix for sure. Thanks for attaching the images! I believe any one of them is better as a leading image. Scientelensia (talk) 16:52, 31 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Quantling @DanielRigal @RoxySaunders just a courtesy ping to see if anyone has any more opinions of my suggestion, and latest clarification? Scientelensia (talk) 10:25, 18 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
What suggestion? What is the proposed alternative image? Of the four images below the current image is very obviously best one to use as the lead image. Linking transphobia to the far-right is perfectly reasonable. That's where most of it comes from even if it likes to pretend otherwise. The article can cover the nuances of this. Your contention that "most 'Transphobia' (i.e. general opposition against the concept of trans people) comes from the centre and centre-right" is simply incorrect. Most likely you have been taken in by the way that transphobia frequently cloaks itself in a pseudo-liberal affect. (That said. I can't help noticing the way that you used quotation marks there. I hope that you are not trying to dispute the legitimacy of the topic itself?) If there is another image that might be better then we can consider that but if it is just those four then we should definitely stick with what we have. --DanielRigal (talk) 12:29, 18 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
The quotation marks are just my way of drawing attention to the word's definition, just as I might say 'floccinaucinihilipilification' is the action of judging something to be worthless. TransActual says that "The core value underlying all transphobia is a rejection of trans identity and a refusal to acknowledge that it could possibly be real or valid." – this basic definition has nothing to do with the far right. Even if transphobia is a far-right sentiment in the majority (and I have not been 'taken in' by anything), the picture used should be something connected to the very basic definition of the article. Hence, pictures B, C and D are appropriate, because they are not connected with Nazism. Even if you contend that "Your contention that "most 'Transphobia' (i.e. general opposition against the concept of trans people) comes from the centre and centre-right" is simply incorrect." – it would be wrong to suggest that transphobia is specifically and intrinsically linked with Nazism. Wouldn't it? I think we should be as clear as possible on this site. What are your reasons for disliking these images, and do you have a better suggestion? Scientelensia (talk) 04:00, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
To make my point shorter – a reader unfamiliar with the subject could reasonably infer from the lead image that transphobia ≈ Nazi ideology. Which isn't (always) true. WP:FALSEBALANCE should not be considered neutrality, as you @DanielRigal yourself correctly note. Scientelensia (talk) 04:02, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
My solution obviously isn't to remove all imagery relating to transphobia, in case that was what you somehow thought. Rather, I am proposing more suitable alternatives. I'm not arguing that the photograph is irrelevant to transphobia. I'm arguing that, as the lead image of an article about the entire concept, it disproportionately foregrounds one extreme manifestation and therefore isn't the most representative choice. Scientelensia (talk) 04:03, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Scientelensia If you have an image that you think would be a good addition to the article, please add it and/or share it here. I would refrain from deleting the existing image unless we reach a consensus here. —Quantling (talk | contribs) 16:58, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have done above now! Thanks, Scientelensia (talk) 21:44, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think the alternatives presented are better, and I'm doubtful whether it's possible to have a perfectly representative lead image on an article like this. The sticker photo is a good photo, but TERFism is also a small subset of all transphobia and in a global perspective I doubt it's nearly as significant as "conventional" right-wing hate. The graffito is just not a very good photo. The stickman symbol feels a bit trivial for a WP:LEADIMAGE; I'm not so sure it's a "natural and appropriate representation of the topic... the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference work". I think the current image is still be best lead image: it's a good photo, it's a natural representation of transphobia "in the wild", and right-wing hate is a very prominent category of transphobia.
For comparison: Racism does not have a lead image. Sexism has a suffragette being arrested (certainly not the most prominent form of sexism today). Homophobia has a pro-discrimination flyer. Antisemitism doesn't technically have a lead image, but it does have a navbox with the same title, with a Nazi yellow badge. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 10:40, 19 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
What you say makes a lot of sense to me. Given the various other pages you cite, would it be acceptable or good to simply remove any leading image, and refer to the pre-existing navbox? Scientelensia (talk) 15:03, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
We already have a pretty good lead image. The only reason I can see to change it would be if there was an even better one to replace it. I don't see a consensus to move it down. Removing it completely would be vandalism. If you think I am wrong then feel free to start an RfC to gauge the consensus. My view is that an RfC with only two options, status quo and no image at all is a complete waste of time.
What might be more productive is to use some of the other images elsewhere in the article.
The TERF sticker strikes me as a good one. I think that would go a long way to address any concerns that the article gives the impression that this is purely a old style far-right phenomenon by illustrating the feminist/pseudo-feminist strand of transphobia. (I am not convinced that the article actually does this but using the image could to help prevent any such misunderstandings.) To this end, I've added it to the In feminism section. Even if we don't resolve anything else today, at least that seems like a small step in the right direction. ----DanielRigal (talk) 18:21, 20 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Should I perhaps start an RfC with four options – a) Keep, b) Replace with the TERF sticker file c) Replace with the transphobia symbol file d) Delete and do not replace. I still maintain my position on the basis that WP:FALSEBALANCE should not be considered neutrality, as you correctly observe. Scientelensia (talk) 10:08, 23 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Section "Physical violence"

I think this section should be rewritten. It downplays physical violence against trans people since it focuses on the very specific part of the source in which trans people in general are less likely to be victims of homicide while leaving out a lot of important context which is mentioned in the sources. The source itself says that the data is unreliable and homicides of trans people are very likely undercounted.

I think the part about the lower murder rates in general gives the impression that trans people are somewhat safer than the general population. That's why it should include some context about how unreliable the data is and that trans people are way more likely to be victim of a violent crime and therefore are more precautious. (See here or here)

Other source: "Transgender people over four times more likely than cisgender people to be victims of violent crime" https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/ ~2026-43667-98 (talk) 19:01, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

I certainly agree that that section is lacking. If you want to write up a proposed wording, you can post it here as an edit request. Alternatively, you could register an account and make a few edits somewhere else to get autoconfirmed, at which point you will be able to edit this page yourself. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 22:26, 8 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
