Yes I was just about to make a talk section on here about this. The original quote from Dan Zak's article is:

"Roger Ebert taught the world to love the movies. Look how many movie lovers are publishing their gratitude in tribute, in personal terms. Look how some refer to “the movies,” with its definite article — his populist, intimate, Midwestern way of referring to his life’s passion."

It seems to me Zak is saying that "the movies" is a Midwestern thing to say, rather than Roger Ebert's writing style being 'Midwestern', whatever that may mean (and Dan Zak did not even say writing style in the cited article). Usually after the subject dies, their infobox is replaced depicting the subject during their "prime"/younger years. Arguably, Ebert's prime years would be in the 1980s during his television hosting career. Recently a publicity photo of Ebert for Siskel and Ebert was uploaded.
